Blog Reflection:

Blog Reflection: From the entire capstone project I learned a lot about Dentistry. I gained personal and social experience. An this is because I used a lot of communication, and intelligence. while I was at the office of Dr. Woo, I watched carefully as Dr. Woo handled each patient. And to understand everything I had to think like a dentist. I was fully engaged in special treatments at the office by doing small things to help the doctor during busy treatments. I was allowed to show patients where their room was located, and also to hand the doctor tools when their was any kind of treatment going on. I did a lot of small tasks that helped the doctor a lot during busy days. And from all this I learned  what a dentist's job is on a daily basis. Their was some challenges I faced at the office, like watching crowns or cavities being filled. I felt very uncomfortable in the beginning an then slowly I became comfortable. Another challenge for me was understanding how to read x-rays, how impressions are made at the lab, and also understanding symptoms that patients had due to untreated cavities, etc. I learned at the office that teamwork and honesty were what makes a good place. An that its important to have a good relationship with your patients so that they wont hesitate telling you their problem. overall I enjoyed shadowing a dentist, it was fascinating to see possible ways to fix problems in the mouth. I would also say that I have improved as a shadowier because when I first started to see things happening in the office it was confusing a lot  but slowly I started to recognize everyday procedures their. Overall I had a good experience their working with a dentist and patients, and I learned a lot about Dentistry.

Today is April 4th 2013, Today I have completed my 25 hours of shadowing Dr. Woo. I was their this morning from 8, and stayed their for 6 hours. It was a bit different at the office today because every patient was having different treatments. Their was some older people that came in for an "impression" which was very interesting to see because it was the first time I had seen it. Their was some children that came in for cavity refill which looked painful mostly because they needed an injection to numb the mouth. Today I toke many photos and I also toke a short video clip that I can use in my presentation. Today was my last day their, but it was worth it to be their today because of all the new things I got to see. I was also in the room where the x-rays where made an it was fascinating. After this I will soon post a reflection an self evaluation.

Today is April 3, 2013. today I completed 7 hours of shadowing my dentist. This morning it was very busy at the office because their several patients. Every patient had some different treatments. Either a crown or semi crown. Their was a diabetic patient today that needed to see a specalists because they  had a broken crown that couldn't be fixed in a regular dentists office. Their was also many children that came in today, it was a bit diiferent treatment for them because Dr. Woo had to handle them with more care because they would be very scared of the treatment.  While observing the kids I realized how important it is to have an relationship with your patients, it basically so that your patient can feel comfortable with you. At the end of most treatment dr woo encouraged patients to floss on a daily basis. Today at the office while Dr. woo handled patients I would hand her tools that she needed. I also escorted patients to their room where they would be treated. I also felt more comfortable being their to understand how a dentists job is like. I also felt confident to become what I want to be by witnessing the actual job of a dentist. Tomorrow is the last day I will be going. I will go their for my last 6 hours.

More shadowing 2/21/13

Today I met with my mentor again and completed 6 more hours of shadowing. It was another busy day at the office. This time I felt more comfortable observing patients than last time. Many patients came in for a regular cleaning. I noticed that most of the older patients needed crowns on their teeth due to big cavities. They were also asked to come back in 4 months rather than 6. I was surprised to see that a lot of older people cared so much about their teeth an were very responsible with taking care of their teeth, I thought that they wouldn't really care as much. Before patients would come in me an dr woo looked at the patients X-rays an I found it really interesting to see how decisions are made based on the X-rays. Another thing I found really important at the dentist is that connection with the patients is really important because its good to have a good relationship with your patient so that they will feel comfortable telling you how their teethe health is. As every patient came in dr woo asked not only their teeths health but also on how the patients day is going. I feel like being a dentist is actually a very good job, I asked dr woo if she likes being a dentist and she said yes and said that whatever job you have it's important you enjoy it so that you are satisfied with your career. Dr woo also introduced me to her patients an they told me that dr woo is a great dentist, I agreed with them because dr woo is a great dentist. I also toke some more notes today an evaluated how satisfied patients looked with their treatment an everyone seemed so happy. Lastly I did a lot observing today and will go back to do more shadowing on April 3rd.

Today I met with My mentor, "Dr. Woo", and completed 6 hours of shadowing. I went in the morning at 8am and stayed their until 2pm. It was very interesting to be their experiencing what a dentist is responsible for and their overall job. Today at the office many patients came in and either and their teeth cleaned or had a cavity filled, etc. Before I stated shadowing my dentist i thought that being a dentist isn't a hard job but after being their today i realized that they have alot of responsibilities. Dentist usually have a busy day because of all the patients that come in. As every patient came in, I toke notes on what doctor Woo does and how she handles patients. I learned that its important that you ask the patient if they felt any pain or experienced anything unusual before you start a cleaning. It gives the dentist feedback on the teeth overall health. Dr. woo would also show me that its good to look at the x-rays first to see if the patient has any cavities. Then I saw how a regular cleaning goes. Some patients had a cavity filling today and their procedure was different because of the tools that are needed to fill a cavity. After every patient left Dr. Woo showed me how the area is cleaned and how the tools are cleaned. I also saw the lab room where the tools are cleaned and where x-rays are done. It all looked very unique to me because i never thought that a dentist would have certain machines for cleaning and doing x-rays. I enjoyed observing Dr. Woo today and look forward to meeting with her again. I accomplished many things, for example seeing a dentists day goes by. I will meet with my mentor again next Thursday and learn more about dentistry

College Demands

Senior Year, the year students are most excited becasue they will be moving on to college. Most students tend to slack off senior year becasue its their last year in high school. They get so proud of their achievment that they have passed k-12 that they forget that senior year is the most important year. A good way to keep seniors on task would be that their teachers remind them of their importance in doing good in senior year. Its the year that a student can show off to colleges that they can work hard and are motivated to becoming successful. I believe that colleges should not take away entrances to their campuses from seniors who let their grades fall because students work hard all year but go through many diffilculties, they forget their goal becasue of believeing senior year is a year to relax, and because they should still get a chance to prove themselves in college that they be much better.

I understand that colleges want to pick students that will meet their requirements and that are motivated to succedding. But colleges shouldn't always assume that if a person doesn't do great during senior year that they will fail in college. If students believe that they can do good in college than they should get a chance rather than determining that they will fail. I believe that students should not slack off senior year and should prove to colleges that they can meet their goals. But if a student does he should atleast get a chance to get into a community college and from their get to transfer to get into a university. Some students struggle in high school and get extra help to pass but when they find out that they can't get into a college of their choice they lose track of their goal and feel like they have failed in life.

Seniors should have to work hard for their goals. If they want to get into a university they have to start working hard freshmen year. Due to peers and family background some students give up from the start and believe that they won't be able to succed
